Those unpleasant plant-like organisms are called blanket weed. Blanket weed sprouts in almost any types of ponds, but is more common in koi ponds. The natural environment of the pond allows the blanket weed from building a colony. They swarm on plants, rocks, stream bed, and even at the bottom of pond. Once it has grown onto the ponds surface, it can proliferate quickly, in which it may suffocate fish and tarnish the ponds appearance. Beware: blanket weed keeps from coming back no matter how hard you prayed them not to.

Where do blanket weeds thrive?

Blanket weed is part of natural food chain of the pond. Otherwise, its abnormal growth is encouraged by the environment, wherein excessive sunlight, nutrients, and heat are present. Just like normal plants, blanket weed needs sunlight for photosynthesis. Letting your clear pond exposed to sunlight means allowing those blanket weeds from thriving in your pond. Nitrates and Phosphates satisfy the nutritional needs of algae. These nutrients are normally present in tap water and the fish metabolism. If those nutrients are teeming in your pond, you are tolerating the growth of blanket weeds. Have you ever noticed that the pond becomes greener more often during summer? This is because the warm temperature spurs the increase of blanket weeds.

However, some blanket weeds grow even in the environment not favourable to them. This means that they grow in a pond free from the factors mentioned above. Blanket weeds proliferate in alkaline and calcium-rich water, yet resistant to ponds with less heat. It is sometimes puzzling because the moment you manage to keep your pond blanket weed-free, it is the time when the blanket weed attacks and invades the pond. If this happens, you have to check the water chemistry pond additives, treatments, and food that might have caused the waters vulnerability to blanket weeds.

Is it true that overfeeding fish helps blanket weed grow fast?

The answer is YES. I understand that pond owners are not aware of the effects of overfeeding fish. Some pond owners surmise that giving plenty of food in the pond helps fish mature quickly, and they are completely unaware that those excess feeds nourish the blanket weeds. Those feeds release nitrates and ammonia needed by blanket weeds. You have to be very careful in feeding the fish. Make sure that you are feeding the fish, not the blanket weeds!

Eliminating Blanket Weed

You dont have to wait for the pond to become severe before taking necessary prevention. Theres an old adage rings true, Prevention is better than cure, that is apt in treating blanket weed problems. Although blanket weed is not really dangerous, it destroys the beauty of your pond, and its overabundance is dangerous for fish.

Dealing with blanket weeds is purely common sense. You cannot eliminate them if you are providing them the environment they love. Like what has been said earlier, the suitable environment for blanket weeds is sunlight, warm temperature, and sunlight; thus, removing one, two, or three factors can prevent those blanket weed from thriving on your pond.
