The Truth behind SEO Myths

Search engines are always changing their algorithms

, largely in order to keep spam under control. This has fostered many myths about how search engines rank and index sites, among other things. You need access to the real story and know how to recognize myths if you want to profit from SEO. So let's examine some commonly believed myths about SEO that you should be aware of.

One widespread fallacy is that you should submit your URL to the search engines. Now, with the Internet growing with the speed of light, search engines are getting more and more advanced. Therefore, you are no longer required to register your URL manually to get it listed in the search engines. Sites are crawled by search engine spiders all the time so the quickest way to make sure your site is indexed is to have some links back to it from forums and Web 2.0 properties that are visited by bots all the time. If you register your website's address directly with the search engines it could end up taking you a lot longer to get indexed and rank, which is something you want to avoid. So, listing your site on other top sites is one way to quickly get your site indexed by the search engines.

Use of the words in your Meta tag is not required on that particular page. Even though this is a myth, it still gets taught by many SEO professionals. Meta tags are meant to use keywords not already on the page. The main point, however, is that neither Google nor Yahoo use these tags for ranking.

Another myth is the fact that your site needs to be updated all the time, even though some think it has an effect on your SERP rankings. While adding new content and updating your website regularly will not affect your search engine rankings, at the same time it will lead to spiders crawling your site more often. This means that you shouldn't make forced updates if your site doesn't need it simply to keep the search engines happy. It will have little effect on them. A little searching will reveal that many top ranking websites in popular niches haven't been updated in ages.

Despite the fact that these myths are quite widespread, you shouldn't allow them to make your search engine optimization efforts even harder. When you're starting to promote your site or any site with the search engines, it's important to make sure that you know what the truth is, so that you may put your efforts in the right direction.
