The Use Of Telephones Around The Modern World

Obviously everyone knows that the telephone is used as a form of communication

, but communication can be used for a variety of reasons. Firstly and probably most apparent is the use of the telephone for personal conversations or for making arrangements. The majority of people in the world use phones regularly for these two purposes, with mobiles becoming increasingly popular it seems that we are becoming more and more dependant on them. It is arguable that people were more organised 20 years ago as they did not have the mobile as an option, last minute changes in plans or misunderstanding of directions are all made far more manageable with mobile phones. This freedom has unquestionably been contributing factor in the increasing pace of modern life. Prior to mobile phones probably the most common use of the telephone was for personal conversations, it allowed friends and family all around the world to stay connected. Furthermore emergency services have utilised the telephone to great success, allowing for instant communication where time is everything.

While these uses of telephone have been effective and respected, this is not to say that all of us have used it in the same manor. As were all aware there are many people who have abused the power. First and foremost are telepests. Though telephones can allow people to communicate with loved ones around the world or get in touch with emergency services in an instant, they also allow others the same privilege with us. Telemarketing companies are able to reach us in our private homes in our free time, granted modern cordless phones have caller ID features to avoid these calls but the potential still remains.

Currently modern technology has allowed for telephones to be used in even more spectacular ways. Smart phones that connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi have brought new possibilities to communication. Skyping used to be limited to computers, and while this was free and arguably better than a phone call in some ways it wasnt accessible or practical at times. With this level of communication available on a mobile phone it is not surprising that more and more people are signing up for smart phones. Where once a phone call from a mobile was expensive, (pay as you go), now video calls to anywhere in the world are available for free at the touch of a button. There is no doubt that being able to see someones face when speaking with them allows a phone call to be far more personal.
