The V-hinge:the Snow Plow Redesigned
When moving ice and snow,a snow plow is a must for skid steer loader operators.
Most heavy duty skid steer snow plow attachments come in 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-foot widths and have a wide array of features, including stainless steel mold boards, a reversible, bolt-on cutting edge, and 3/4-inch steel construction.
A characteristic also found on the best quality conventional snow plow attachment will be the "trip" feature. Tripping refers to the unfortunate (but common) instances when the plow blade bangs into an obscured curb, berm, or concrete lip and bounces back harshly. Many times tripping can damage both the property and the plow attachment. The feature provides a dampening mechanism that reduces the impact on the machinery, and prevents extensive damage to the plow and the obstruction.
A good quality snow plow is considered a "staple in the stable" for most owner-operators. However, as useful as it is, the conventional snow plow is quickly becoming second fiddle to a newer style of plow, the V-hinged plow.
A V-hinged snow plow is one of the most versatile plows available for skid steer loaders. The best quality V-hinged snow plow will include all of the features mentioned above, and is built to do the same jobs as the traditional snow plow. But with its ingenious center-reticulated design, the V-hinged snow plow can simply do more. Each side of a V-hinged plow blade can be moved independently of the other, all from within the cab of the skid steer machine. The V-hinged plow can be configured to plow straight, plow snow as a concave scoop, or split-plow in the "convex-V" formation. And each of the configurations makes its unique contribution to the work at hand. On a small road or driveway, the convex-V configuration can shove even large volumes of snow to both shoulders simultaneously. When both halves of the plow blade are at the same angle, the V-hinged plow will propel snow to either side of the machine.
For lightning-quick clearing of large areas such as school, church and shopping center parking lots, wide roads and drives and industrial areas, a concave "scoop" configuration, the V-hinged plow acts quite like a snow pusher, developing a large growing pile of snow to the front of the skid steer and eliminating the large volume of spoilage that would be left behind by a conventional snow plow. In high-acreage plowing situations like these, it is good to know that most V-hinged plows come in a variety of sizes, from five feet to 10 feet in width.
As previously mentioned, many different V-hinged plow attachments come equipped with a variety of incredibly useful features, not the least of which would be heavy-duty, adjustable, front-mounted drag shoes that not only smooth out the way the snow plow negotiates the ground beneath it, but also allows the driver to adjust the height of the plow to keep working in the snow without digging into the surface below.
But it can also be used for some unusual activities. In the "V" formation, this snow plow can easily break through high drifts without causing a lack of lateral stability in the skid steer loader. Turn it to a convex-V, and the snow plow can break up stubborn piles of ice and snow, as well as break through packed down snow.
When choosing snow attachments this winter, it is important to choose a snow plow attachment that is as tough as it is versatile. The V-hinged plow may just be what gets some skid steer operators through the winter quickly and easily.
