The Value Of An Uninterruptible Power Supply

I remember the first computer we had as a family

. My father was a certified public accountant with his own practice, and one day in the early '80's, he came home with a TRS-80, a machine made by Radio Shack, which was owned by Tandy, which was better known at the time for leather supply.

From leather to electronics to computers; quite the amazing progression! Anyway, I was elated. A computer, in my own home! Next, there would be robots and flying cars. I was given my own floppy disk, the size of small notebook with less storage capacity than my present cell phone, and started learning how to write simple programs in BASIC.

Anyway, we had one solid rule, both at the home and the office when it came to the computers. If there was a thunderstorm, the computers has to be shut off. If there was a lightning strike somewhere that caused a power surge, the computers could explode and would kill us all.

Not quite the truth, but a thunderstorm caused that level of alert in our house as we scrambled to get all of the machines turned off. Later, my father would invest in a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply. This was a box about the same size as a large box computer that was plugged into the wall.

The computer and monitor were then plugged into it, and if there was a thunderstorm or a lightning strike, we were no longer put on red alert. The UPS acted as a surge protector and a power supply, which meant that if there was a black out or lapse in power, the office could continue to operate until power was restored.

In a way, it felt like we were off the grid, but in reality, we were extending the power of the grid beyond its normal ability.

Where we lived, on the open planes of Wyoming, the UPS systems were invaluable. The area was prone to frequent storms, including tornadoes, that lead to several power outages a year. More important than keeping the office running was keeping the computers safe, and power outages are as harmful to machines twenty years ago as they are today.

As a matter of fact, our systems are even more delicate, and so a UPS system is even more useful and crucial. Whether you live on the Great Planes, in Houston, or by the sea, a UPS system will keep your data and equipment safe and accessible.
