The Value of Meditation

The Value of Meditation

The Value of Meditation

One night while camping out at Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, looking up at the stars, I had a simple, yet profound, "aha" moment.

In an instant I knew that I had come from some "place" or some "thing" which was beyond my comprehension, and that it was there I would be returning at some point in my life.

Without trying to define or limit that "something" with my feeble understanding, I was able to authentically say to myself that I owed my existence to that Great Mystery. And to that Great Mystery I was, I am, truly grateful.

In that brief moment, I also realized that I did not need some authority figure outside of my self to connect me with my Source.

I am already connected. In fact, it is impossible for me to be disconnected. My Source is in me, outside of me, all around me. The only thing that stands in my way of communing with this Great Mystery is my own ignorance and lack of awareness.

The truth is, I am a complete and whole being. The challenge is that my mind just hasn't caught hold of that fact yet.

So how do we get that awareness of our connectedness? How do we dwell there?

What we do is prepare the ground of our being to be receptive to the reality of Great Mystery. We can't force, we can only allow it.

Allowing. That, I think, is the value of meditation. Meditation is moving into a state of receptivity. You can't make things happen with meditation, but meditation creates the space for great things to happen.

So, once in that receptive mode, what do we do?

We plant seeds into that fertile soil of your being.

What kind of seeds?

Well, that depends on what kind of reality you want to live into.

I, for one, want a peaceful, fruitful, lush, joyful and loving existence. So it is those seeds that I will plant into my being. I will contemplate these qualities, reflect on them, ponder them, conjure them into my mind and my heart until they come to full fruition in my existence.

These are the seeds I am planting. What seeds do you want to plant into your soul?

My prayer:

"Source of my being, I call on You to clear my mind and my heart, to lead me to an understanding of who I really am, to guide me to my True Self, and to bring my life to full fruition."

So be it.
