The Wanderer: Part 10 of 73

The Wanderer by Callie Roos, motivational speaker and author

Part 10 of 73

I have been silent for quite a while now. It is as though Xaba has lost interest in my story. I am sure he is not listening anymore. Suddenly it is dead quiet in the bushveld. "The lions are close by," he says. "There are four females, two younger ones.

I am listening," he says. "What are you thinking about?" I ask. "Oh, only about what it was like when I was a kid." "And?" "I did not need shoes." "Are you trying to be sarcastic?" I ask. "No, I am just thinking how different it was. You were telling me about your shoes," says Xaba. "I am listening." "I don't think anyone meant any harm by it," I continue, "but I heard it over and over again, the same story - I would not be able to run or take part in sport. My entire primary school career went by without my ever really playing any sport or running even though I came from a sporting family. I can remember that I once went to rugby practice in grade six, but that did not work out either. I really wanted to play, but I quickly gave up again; every time. It's not as though I didn't run and play at all as a child. We played lots of ball games, ran around a lot. I think I was actually quite good, but whenever I was supposed to do it in front of other people, I just couldn't. I held back. I put myself on the sidelines. I became a loner when it came to these things," I say.

"You are one," says Xaba. "What?" I ask. "A loner - even today." "Can I continue my story now?" I ask Xaba. He nods his head. I carry on talking. "In grade nine we moved to another town, away from the big city. It was a good thing. A small town, a small school, an Agricultural College really. There were fewer children. One morning we were running heats for athletics, to see who might qualify for the school athletics team. We were running informally, between the rugby posts. I don't know what made it different, but on this particular morning I also ran. When I was about three quarters of the way across the field, I suddenly noticed that I was in front, competing, quite a way ahead of the others. We ran again, and I was in front again every time.

Two years later I was the best athlete in the school.
