The Wanderer: Part 24 of 73
The Wanderer by Callie Roos, motivational speaker and author
Part 24 of 73
"I walked around the open pool of water. Under a thick bush I discovered the dead coals of the fire where they had waited for us the previous night. It looked as though they had pheasant or chicken for dinner. The left-over bones were lying in the coals. One by one I picked them out of the ashes. The scraps of meat left on the bones had grilled to a brittle delicacy, just the way I like it.
That is where I learned to be grateful, Xaba. Even today when my food, especially the skin or the fat, is slightly charred, I nibble off the burned, brittle bits and think back and feel grateful. Then I think back to a time when I had very little andyet it was abundance. While my stuff was drying, I quietly sat back and gnawed every last piece of charred skin and flesh off those bones. 'I will have to push hard,' the thoughts churned around in my head. 'I feel strong. Now I must catch up with the others as quickly as possible. Now I must finish!'
"The eleventh day passed. For the next five days I was on my own. I did not know if anyone had survived, who was still going. The only news I received was when the instructorstopped his motorbike next to me one morning and barked: 'The other one is dead. The hyenas ate him.' Trying to intimidate me, I thought. It could have been true though.
The hyenas were hard on my heels every night. They walkedwith me all the way. Five days and five nights, alone, just my thoughts and me, up and down. Before dark I reached the Botswana border and turned towards the highway the road crossing the entire Caprivi Strip from east to west.
