For a while there is silence

For a while there is silence. "We were created to change," Xaba repeats. He is talking more softly now. "We can, we just need to start playing the game - every day. Make this a better place." "Which place?" I ask. "The planet. We can make it a better place. Right now it is dreadful. Just look at it! Africa does not look good. It is embarrassing to show it to anyone. We can make it better, but then we must play the game." "We have just been to Mozambique," I tell him. "It looks as though the guys there are ready to start playing the game again. Do you think this is the big secret that life is trying to teach us?" I ask.

"What do you mean?" "The big secret. Isn't life trying to teach us something? I was wondering if it might be to play the game?" "Life constantly teaches us," says Xaba. "Yes, but maybe this is the crucial secret and if we master this one, then everything will change." Again he does not answer. "Maybe the fact that the white stinkwood broke, does mean something after all," Xaba says after a while.

"Like what?" I want to know. He can tell that I am intrigued. "We always think in opposites; one thing or the other. Think about it, it's either life or death, good or bad, survival or surrender. That is the place where most people are: survive or surrender. Maybe there is another way of seeing things." "And that is?" "To live life. Just that. Live. If you are living, you can change things, make a difference. After all, life unfolds through us like a beautiful flower opening in bloom." Xaba lights his pipe. It smells good. "That thing is going to kill you," I say. "What?" he asks. "The pipe," I say. "Not if I have lived," he answers. "Is that the secret?" I ask.

He turns his head and looks into my eyes, the smoke slowly drifting past his dark face. "Maybe," he says after a while. "Maybe."
