The Wild Cats of Argentina
If you are planning to visit Buenos Aires for a short stay, you will find so much to see and do that your time will be up in a flash. You will most likely want to pay a second visitand a third! If you are one of the many nature lovers who visit South America, who have a great interest in the wildlife of Argentina, you will find that some animals are unique to the continent and you won't see them anywhere else.Argentina has its own share of wild cats. These are some of the more famous.Probably the most common of the wild cats in Argentina is the Geoffrey's Cat. Even so, it is on the threatened list as it is extensively hunted for its beautiful spotted and striped coat. Occasionally some black ones are found.Along with the Puma it is the Southernmost of the world's wild cats. It is found throughout Argentina, the ones at the South in Pategonia being larger than those in the North. The large cats can reach 700mm in length. They are known to be good swimmers. The Puma has many names: cougar, mountain lion, mountain cat, or panther. They hunt both small and larger animals, such as deer. They are capable of hunting domestic animals as well. They are reddish to silvery grey in colour. The term "black panther" is a misnomer, as you don't get black ones. The black cats that have been seen are actually jaguars.Pumas are to be found in both Americas, from the Yukon of Canada right down to the South of Argentina in Pategonia. The jaguar is the third largest cat in the world after the tiger and the lion. It looks very similar to a leopard, but is larger and heavier. They are threatened but a few may sometimes be seen in the Northern parts of Argentina. Normally spotted, occasionally a black one is seen.In the pampas or savannah you will find the The Pampas Cat or Grass Cat. If you can imagine a cross between a house cat and a leopard, then have a pampas cat. It has leopard like spots, but it also has stripes on some parts of its body. It is small and chunky in build and has a short tail. The Margay is also known as the Long Tailed Spotted Cat. Those of this endangered species to be found in Argentina are usually seen in the far North of the country, in the warm and humid forests. It is unique and like no other cat in the world. Many cats climb trees, some very well indeed. But the Margay is something like a monkey or a squirrel in the branches. It is the only member of the cat family that can climb down a tree head first, and is even able to hang from a branch by one hind foot!So at home is it in trees, it even builds a nest there for its young, where they are born. Each litter usually consists of a single kitten.Like most other smaller cats, they eat small mammals, birds, eggs, small reptiles, with small amounts of green plants. It has rosette spots, like a leopard and a very long tail.If you have some more time to spend or you plan to return several times, you may decide to opt for a holiday home, an apartment or house for rent or buy rather than stay in a hotel.
