Costa Brava means Wild Coast, situated in Girona province in the Catalonia region with an extensive coastline as long as 5,800 square kilometers. It offers not only fun and sun, but is also an ideal location for divers with its attractive Mediterranean climate of mild winters and dry hot summers. This area has a population of 665,000 and comprises the counties of Girones, Alt Empord, Selva, Baix Empord and Pla de l'Estany.

Attractions

This part of Spain became a popular tourist resort in the 1970s with not only historical attractions, but also the local snacks of fish and chips and sangria. Costa Brava has a very significant Roman as well as Greek history and it has the honor of being the treasured birthplace of Catalina's beloved son, Dali.

The Pyrenees Mountains of Catalonia are spectacular as they loom high at Costa Brava's northern border, with Barcelona on its west. Other major tourist sites include the Natural Park, medieval villages, pottery craftwork, the botanical gardens and the old quarters. The impressive Dal Museum lies close by in Figueras, which is worth a visit; another museum, Ciudadela Museum, is available in Roses.

Many fiestas are celebrated here every year with full colors and festivity; these are local festivals filled with music and traditions that go as far back as medieval times.

There are many quaint and charming villages scattered around Costa Brava that were shaped by the differing natural terrains.

There are many impressive bars and cafes in Costa Brava and its surrounding cities, which offer a wide and good selection of local fare. There are more than 2,500 restaurants that will keep you gastronomically satisfied especially, with the famed seafood and other local produce of high quality.

Places to stay are also abundant on this coastline with a varied selection of hotels, campsites, hostels, self-service apartments, rural accommodation or mountain shelters for the more adventurous.
