This takes place between the months of June and September. During this time, the animals in there thousands try to cross the Mara river into the Masaai Mara from Serengeti. This is a survival for the fittest as hundreds of them die from drowning. Others are captured by crocodiles in the river. It is a very spectacular moment. The wild beast migration has become part of the great wonders of the world. It now attracts tourism from all corners of the world. This is a moment that is captured and celebrated everywhere in the world. Many documentaries have been made from this event. Breath taking just watching the animals fight for there very lives inside the Mara river.
The black wildebeest and the blue wild beast both natives of Africa are subspecies of the Connochaetes family. They are hoofed mammals and needless to say, herbivores. A gown up wildebeest weighs between 120kgs and 270 kgs. They are 1.28 to 1.48m in height. They inhabit the plains and open woodlands of Africa especially the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Mara in Kenya and Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia.
It is not fully known why the migration takes place annually. Search for greener pasture has been argued to be the only reason in the past but in recent times, this has been questioned. The wildebeest migration takes place even when there is a good grazing land in the other side of the river Mara. More is being researched to find out why the animals risk so much in crossing the river.
