The Wonderful World of Goldfish

The word goldfish brings to mind simple little fish swimming around in a bowl, but the world of goldfish is so much more than that. There are many types of them around, from the very bizarre to the absolutely stunning.

Common: The common goldfish is the foundation of all modern varieties. It closely resembles its wild ancestor and is a hardy fish that is suitable for tanks and ponds, requiring minimal care and equipment. They come in many colors: red, orange, brown, blue and other combinations and patterns.

Comet: It is believed this variety of goldfish originated from the United States in the 1800s. The comet is a versatile fish that can be kept in aquariums or in outdoor ponds. They resemble the common goldfish with the only difference being its fins are longer and sleeker. Like the common variety, many color and pattern variations exist.

Shunbunkin: The shunbunkin goldfish originates from Japan. They are shaped like the common goldfish but have nacreous scales - a mixture of transparent and metallic scales which gives them a pearly effect. These goldfish come in a variety of patterns and are often referred to as calico goldfish because of their interesting color combinations. Blue shunbunkins are the most prized.

Fantail: The fantail goldfish is one of the oldest goldfish varieties in existence. They can be traced back to over a thousand years; they are native to China and Japan. They come in a variety of colors and do well both in aquariums and pond environments.

Veiltail: Veiltails are attractive goldfish with long, elegant tails and fins. They come in a wide range of colors and patterns and their scales can be either metallic or nacreous. As elegant as they look, they are clumsy swimmers and should only be kept with similar fish and in tanks that don't contain sharp objects to avoid damage and injury to their long, flowing tails. They thrive in temperatures exceeding 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Celestial: These small torpedo-shaped goldfish lack dorsal fins and have normal eyes when young, but as they age and grow their eyes begin to protrude and point upwards giving them a quirky and endearing appeal. It is very rare to find celestials with nacreous scales. Sadly, because of the position of their eyes, their eyesight is poor and this makes them an unsuitable choice for beginners.
