The military equipment sector that relies heavily on legacy products, but also is a major test ground for the most high-tech and sophisticated connectors in the world, the 2008 military market for connectors was approximately $3 billion dollars. With a growth rate of 6.5 percent from 2007 to 2008, the military market has experienced positive year-over-year growth for over a decade. Although all regions of the world experienced positive growth from 2007 to 2008, some regions out performed others. North America who has consistently had the greatest sales of connectors used in the military sector, also had the smallest year-to-year growth. Europe, who ranks second in connector sales to the military sector, exhibited the greatest growth. Other regions that experienced double-digit growth include China and the ROW region.

From 2008 to 2013, sales of connectors used in the military sector are anticipated to have a CAGR of 3.2 percent. Although all regions are projected to show positive growth, sales in Japan, North America and Europe will be modest, while sales in China will more than double with a CAGR of 17.0 percent. The ROW region, which includes Central and South America, South Africa, Russia and Israel, is also anticipated to have above average growth, with a 5-year CAGR of 8.9 percent. Although connector sales in the military sector are projected to have a positive CAGR of 3.2 percent from 2008-2013, the 2009 economic downturn is going to greatly impact sales numbers, with North America, Europe and Japan experiencing negative growth.

With the economy starting to show signs of stabilizing, it is anticipated that sales of connectors to the military sector should start to show signs of recovery during the first half of 2010. This upturn will create positive growth for all regions during 2010, with the greatest growth in China, followed by ROW and the Asia-Pacific regions. Although North America, Europe and Japan will all show positive growth, they will still not be at the levels prior to the downturn. Projected connector sales to the North American military sector will not be equal to or above 2008 connector sales until 2011. In Japan and Europe, connector sales to the military sector are projected to decline close to 10 percent or more in 2009, and will not be equal to or greater than 2008 sales until 2012. Total world connector sales to the military sector will be equal to or greater than 2008 sales levels by 2011.
