The Worst Decision to Make about Building a Website

The process of building a website involves collecting information, probably throughout your whole life. After you have the information you start putting it in text or in the form of audio and video files. Then you want to share this wisdom with the world through the Internet, and here you discover that you need web hosting for your files and a URL for your content so that people can find it.

If you do like I did when I started online you might go for the free web hosting or free blog services provided by large companies like Google. But here is what happens:

You spend time, maybe years, publishing your hard work on a free blog and keep updating your blog every time you have something new. Your blog (website) becomes popular and people start to revisit and bookmark your site. It goes viral and you become one of the famous bloggers in your field.

And one day you wake up to find that your blog disappeared. You keep searching the web for pages from your blog, and you find them, but when you visit your site you find that the owner of the free service decided to shut you down for violating the terms of service.

You go to their terms of service and try to understand what made them shut you down and waste your years of hard work and earned popularity. After hours of trying to figure out you give up and try to contact their customer service to get your blog back. Maybe you also have used the link provided in your back office area to request re-evaluation of your blog.

After waiting for weeks with no response you dig deeper in their website and find a forum where people will instruct you to file an appeal. While they are doing so you are being humiliated and insulted by someone you'd never met before and you have no clue what gives them the authority to call you names or accuse you with spam or fraud.

You do as instructed and wait for a few more weeks and nothing happens. You check your email and you find an email from the administration of the free blogging platform informing you that your blog has been flagged as a spam and consequently got deleted. This is the email you should have received two months ago.

In very rare cases a blog or two get retrieved after 8 or more months, and that's after losing your audience, your search engine ranking, and some of your content. Now you have to rebuilt trust with your audience.

Imagine if that blog was making you enough money that you decided to be a professional full time blogger and quit your job, or if didn't have a job to begin with and found that blogging can help you pay your bills and put food on the table for your family.

And that's not specific to blogger. Any free service is very likely to disappear. Think about it. If you are running a free hosting service and no one is buying your upgraded packages how long do you think will be enough for you to decide to stop spending money and resources to provide a free service? You are not running a charity, are you?

Even if this never happens to you, what if you decide you want to sell your website and go do something else? Can you sell something you don't own? Can you sell a free blog? Some people will buy it from you, but for peanuts compared to what you can get if that same content was on your own domain hosted on your own server.
