Gramma and the Easter Eggs

One of the most significant people in my life was my grandmother. Her farm was always close to my heart, and yet she appeared only a few times in my dreams. Once before Mom died, Gramma came in a dream with one of her healing bear hugs. That was all there was to the dream, but I remember that I felt so very good that it seemed to strengthen me for the difficusties to come.

While still on my retreat in Detroit, the night of June 6th found me dreaming of playing cards with Mom and Dad. Then the dream changed and suddenly both my mother and my grandfather were there. I felt depressed about things and I was going to tell Mom that it would have been better to stay in heaven, but I feared she would leave. I asked her if she remembered being sick, She seemed to nod " yes" and then my attention went to my grandfather who was sitting at a table. I hugged him and said that I loved him. I asked him when we would all be together. He didn't answer. I asked him where Gramma was and he nodded that she was coming into the room. My excitement grew and I turned but couldn't see anyhone. Others shouted: "Here comes Gramma with a basket of Easter eggs!" I shouted that I cound not see her. Mom laughed as if Gramma were teasing me, but I knelt and put my head on the floor and sobbed. I awoke crying.

At first it seemed like such a sad dream and I was broken hearted at not being able to see Gramma, but upon further reflection, I realized that my grandfather had indeed answered my question. The Easter eggs were the key to it all. We would all be together at the RESURRECTION. I was reassured of their watchful protection and presence, even though I could not see them.

The Cupboard of Cups

The evening of August 9th found me kneeling before a cupboard of cups, weeping. I was given to know that these cups belonged to those who had died. Upon awaking, I began to pray over the dream. how beautiful was the symbolof the CUP OF LIFE. I began to draw a cup for each of my deceased loved ones.

Gramma's cup was a large orange circular one. It contained a steaming brew ready for any visitor o drink. Gramma was hospitality personifed. My grandfather's cup was a green mug. He was very much in turn with nature, a worker of wood. From his cup came a spoon as he had a unique little habit of stirring his coffee with a clicking sound of the spoon. Actually he was a very quiet person, one who had a difficult time showing his feelings except as he so eloquently expressed them in wood. During his life he made about twenty-five grandfather clocks for various people. At his death, several of them reported to us that the clock had stopped.

My borther's cup was a small blue one with a butterfly and a flower upon it. He truly loved life! My mother's cup was a sturdy plain mug with a cracked corner, symbolic of her pouring herself out for others. Later I placed a smiley face and a pair of dancing shoes on the cup in honor of her undying sense of humor and celebrative ability to dance. All of them have touched me in a very powerful way. There is a bond, a communion of saints, where we all help one another and are helped by one another. We must remember to keep their stories alive in our lives.

Another night I saw a large cup which contained four squares of pictures. I placed this cup behind the door in the bottom of the cupboard. To me this is the cup of mly life as yet unfinished, but divided into four parts. Each of them I could continue to work on, to explore and to complete. I carried this theme into my later life as I made a special ceramic cup to be used at a mass at which I would celebrate my golden jubilee. It continually reminds me to live my life to the fullest.
