The advantages of Content Management Systems by System Developer Inn
We build websites using the Joomla open source Content Management System (CMS). This is a powerful platform that enables us to build great looking Google friendly websites with incredible functionality. And as it's open source it's free software. Don't be fooled into thinking that as it's free it doesn't stand up against (often very) expensive commercial content management systems - Joomla is built by a team of thousands of dedicated developers, and with over 200,000 users it's as much a part of the internet as Google.
We chose to use Joomla after extensive study of various types of CMS. The reason? It's dead easy for our customers to update their content. This brings many benefits to us and our customers. As our customers can update their own content quickly and easily they no longer need to pay their web developer to do the tiresome task of updating the HTML. So they save money. But more importantly it gets the customers fully involved in their website, with a hands-on approach. If a customer knows and uses their own website they are more likely to have ideas to develop the site. They may decide they need more functionality such as email capture. They will then in turn come back to us to do these enhancements. It's all about empowering the customers. Many small businesses have complained to me that they feel they have no control over their own website, but yet they have control over every other aspect of their business.
So a customer can save money and be empowered by using a CMS platform. This will make them much more satisfied generally with the level of service our company has given them. They will be more likely to give a good referral.
There are other benefits of a CMS platform. Because the websites are database driven, they have enormous advantages for search engine optmisation . All the navigation is HTML rather than javascript (which is unreadable by the search engines). The navigation is also organized so that the entire site is reachable and readable by the search engines. A further advantage for search engine optimization is that when you plug such things as RSS feeds these are stored in the database and displayed on the page. Traditionally these were javascript links, unreadable by the search engines - so offering no advantages for new keyword-rich content. Whereas with a CMS all those tweets and blog or whatever are actually on the page adding new content -bring Google back to your site!
When you check out other web design agencies ask them what sort of CMS they use. If it's a CMS they've built themselves ask them whether a different agency could work with it - you may want to move your website in the future and this may be tricky if the CMS is bespoke. If they don't use a CMS we'd strongly suggest you ask why - no CMS means every change you want to make will have to be made by the web design agency. And even if they don't charge you for the updates you'll have to wait.
