The Power' factor in positions of responsibility

In some situations people are groomed hard and long in a fiercely competitive environment for positions of responsibility and in others positions of responsibility are assumed without due preparation of the mind and the intellect for such positions of responsibility. The sense of accompanying power' thus is viewed differently. To some responsibility is a sacred duty to serve and yet to others it is a power' to do as one pleases with impunity.

In public or private, a position of responsibility essentially creates a leader. Or leaders assume a position of responsibility. True leaders do not see power' in positions of responsibility they only feel the burden of responsibility and trust. They harbor only one view that of establishing fairness and doing public good. Any deviation of intention or attitude from that turns a leader into demon. Demons see only power' and no sense of responsibility power to misrule and abuse - and sets out to desecrate and destroy. Demons must quickly be removed from that position to relieve organization/country's citizenry from misery. Conscious and conscientious leaders will of course quit voluntarily, under burden of guilt, if they feel that they fall short in ensuring fairness and doing public good. Lesser leaders , devoid of conscience, however, smell profit' from use of power' and will try to cling on - abusing public resources to society's and country's peril.

Good leaders inspire and set examples of good conduct. The pyramid of leaders essentially set the tone at the top and at their various leadership levels. Tone at the top and at various other sub tops set the tone of governance. Tone at the top cascades down and magnifies manifold the nature of governance good to better or bad to worse both for organizations and a country.

Worthy Leaders and top management look within and rectify when confronted with problems. Problems are then contained, workable solution emerges and rectification guards against repetition of previous oversights. Less worthy leaders and top management wrongly pass blame downwards and find scapegoats in subordinates when confronted with problems. Problems are exacerbated, past misdeeds repeated with greater fury and organization / country continue to suffer unnecessarily.

Good leaders and resulting good governance is the bedrock on which success or failure of any other activity for the organization/country will depend. Whether it is a wish to build infrastructure, improve utility services, introduce technology, improve educational standards, build HR skills, engage in collaborations - absence of good and fair governance will make all null and void. Crippling waste of organizational/public resources will only result.

A man lost a key in a dark bush beside a lighted street. Just because there was light on the street where he could see he kept on looking for the key in the lighted part of street but of course to no avail. Acknowledging the fact that the key was in the dark bush beside the street where he could not see would have at least set him thinking and probing in the right direction.

Just like quarrelling parents cannot hope to create a home environment for their children to study and excel real and sustainable progress in any area in a continuing and worsening environment of bad governance will always be a pipe dream.
