The history and culture of Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes, which is often referred to as MK

, is a large town in Buckinghamshire, in the south of England, about 50 miles north of London. It is also the admin centre of the Borough of Milton Keynes. It was previously chosen as a brand new town on 23 January 1967, with the primary idea to become a large city.

Its large area includes the existing towns of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford along with many more villages and farmland. The town took its name from the old village of Milton Keynes, a few miles away from the town centre.

At the time of the 2001 census the population of the Milton Keynes urban area, as well as the nearby Newport Pagnell, was 184,506. The Borough's population is currently estimated to be over 230,000.

There are many businesses in Milton Keynes, there are small local businesses to company headquarters based in Milton Keynes. Some examples of businesses that operate in Milton Keynes are local printers and print factories, web design companies, restaurants, hotels, leisure centres, retail shops, computer services companies, car manufacturers, food companies etc. These are all very popular with visitors to the town and with businesses that need places to entertain clients and hold meetings.

Milton Keynes Central comprises of the National Badminton Centre and was previously home to the National Hockey Stadium. There is also a relatively new football stadium near Bletchley, which is home to the Milton Keynes football team called the Milton Keynes Dons.

Milton Keynes has a 125-mile long system of footpaths and cycle ways for pedestrians and cyclists called the Redway system this network is usually covered with red tarmac. The national Sustrans cycle network runs to and through Milton Keynes. The Swans Way long distance route also does the same.

The town has many lakes within it, one of the most popular is Willen Lake. The lake hosts many watersports, and the North Lake is a safe sanctuary for birds.

Close to the station, the "Planet Ice" ice rink is used for amateur and professional ice hockey as well as fun skating and also amateur figure ice-skating.

Near the central station there is an urban skateboarding area referred to as the Buszy, however the large areas and slopes of the station square remain highly popular with boarders.

About ten minutes away from the centre of Milton Keynes also lays a high security prison called HMP Woodhill. This is regularly seen on the news relating to high profiled crimes and criminals.
