The iPad isn't actually a third gadget but a 3rd Revolution

Your iPad is not actually a third gadget but a third Revolution.

Similar to the car fan giving a hot rod that critical glimpse, 2 Einsteins have been hanging over my computer with remarkable interest. Look, thought one, hes swapped out the battery monitor within the menu bar. And also hes got the Dock all the way down at the lower right of the monitor.

Comparable to hot rodders, techies sport their tweaks and optimizations as badges of honor. That's just how you differentiate between an average user and a power end user -- the former will probably adapt the way he performs to personal computers even while the latter is going to change his machine to the way he performs.

Having said that, a bizarre thing happened at my MacBook right after I witnessed Steve Jobs kick off the iPad last week. Looking at all those little icons in my menubar, I was pondering all these are mere hacks and shortcuts to help put together quick solutions to the computer. Definitely there must be a far better technique.

I was but a wee child of four years old when Apple launched the Macintosh in 1984 and first delivered a graphical user interface to the people. Apple saw these early computers as potent tools but felt that they were too ugly and clumsy. They led us to think there was a greater alternate option. Certainly, there was a great deal of resistance coming from all those who had gotten at ease at carrying out work with flashing cursors.

Back then, the Mac was not really taken too seriously and was quite often regarded as a plaything, particularly its much-maligned mouse-driven method. Even as the Mac struggled from poor market showing, its extraordinary interface changed personal computers across the industry, with just about every PC emulating the Mac's operating system.

And here, 26 years later, you are still interacting with our computing devices in basically the very same way: a cursor-driven user interface in which we point, click, drag, arrange windows, take advantage of drop-down menus, and so on. Although the framework have transformed, the brain inside of a Mac has generally continued to be the same, from the classic Macintosh OS to the contemporary Snow Leopard.

And yet for Apple, it does not matter how perfect the Mac is, it is always hardly good enough. Look into the ubiquitous mouse. Apple has been adamant on a single-button computer mouse for the last two-and-a-half decades for many reasons -- have you spotted a total newbie try out and master a computer mouse with some of those supplemental extra buttons, scroll wheels and variable tracking? Just before you actually reach clickingor right-clicking or scrollingit's important to determine how your motions turn into the motions of an arrow that hovers across the screen. It in fact is a good idea now that we've gotten so familiar with it.

Even though PC designers endeavored to shove computing forwards by introducing additional buttons and controls to try and offer further options for telling a personal computer exactly what to carry out, Apple went in entirely the other path, wondering: how do we reduce a layer of abstraction amid the end user and the computer system?
