The unprecedented public interest in the launch of Apples latest mobile phone, the iPhone 4 can mean one of two things.

Either it is a result of some very clever marketing by the company, or the iPhone 4 indeed is a very special handset. And having looked over the design and features, it is safe to say that the latter is true. Apples last update was the introduction of the 3GS, and was somewhat of a non event, with no changes in design and slight improvements to a handset that was already comfortably the best available. The likes of HTC and Samsung however have upped their game and released models that had the capability of eclipsing the 3GS, thus the launch of iPhone 4 was perhaps more crucial than ever. And quite an update it is, with not only features being greatly improved but a total redesign of the phone. The result is a handset that is just 9.3mm at its thickest point, 24% thinner than the 3GS. Gone is the curved back, replaced with a more flat and streamline design made of treated glass which is incredibly resistant to scratches. The same glass is used on the front of the phone too, which is where the most impressive aspect of the iPhone 4 can also be found. The display on the unit stands head and shoulders above the competition. Boasting a mammoth resolution of 960 x 640 pixels, the impressive 800:1 contrast ratio means a great pallette of colours is displayed. The screen not only looks great for video and photographs, but also web pages, especially ones with small text, as even when zoomed in a great image is maintained.

The multimedia features found on the iPhone 4 are certainly attractive. The update to 3GS saw video capture introduced, where this latest model now steps that up a level to High Definition recording. Shooting footage at an resolution of 720P, the phone also has the capability of downloading a handy movie editing suite named iMovie from iTunes. This allows you to add titles and music to your footage, as well as add various transitions from clip to clip. With regards to still shots, Apple have upped the resolution of the camera to a good but fairly modest 5 million pixels. Rather than attempt to leapfrog its competitors and include an 8 mega pixel camera or higher, they have concentrated making what resolution is available as high quality as possible by increasing the size and quality of the sensor and also added back illumination. What this means to the user is that each pixel is not only bigger, but also has better light absorbing attributes, ultimately resulting in a clearer and more colourful image. A secondary front facing camera has also been added, not only making it perfect for self portraits but meaning that Apple can bring video calling to the masses thanks to FaceTime, a system relying on WiFi connection rather than the 3G network, hence better picture and audio and no call costs. The iPhone 4 has once again put clear daylight between itself and its competitors thanks to a great array of technology and what may be the sexiest design currently available.
