The pain associated with laser hair removal

The pain associated with laser hair removal

Technically hair is a part of your skin, although it grows and separates from it. Your head or the average head is home to around 100,000 hair follicles, your body has a total of perhaps 5 million hair follicles. Some in places you would rather they avoid. The nerve endings in each hair follicle can register movement of the hair shaft and pain. Quite how the pain or movement is registered is a very individual thing, everyone is different with different thresholds. Laser hair removal causes discomfort levels which are very individual they vary from body to body, area to area. Generally the discomfort felt is less than that caused by other methods of hair removal such as threading, waxing or electrolysis. Many people feel no pain at all with laser hair removal. If you ask people what laser hair removal feels like expect a lot of different answers.

Less discomfort is generally felt with smaller treatment areas, having a large area treated may be a lot more difficult to tolerate. People with darker and coarser hair also tend to have more discomfort as do people with darker skin. A darker skin contains more pigment than a lighter skin which means a darker skin absorbs more laser energy than a lighter skin as proportionally more laser energy is absorbed by a greater concentration of pigment. People with darker skins may experience more sensation and discomfort during laser hair removal treatments.

Concerns about pain and discomfort should be immediately discussed with your practitioner, even during the treatment session. There are options easily available to the practitioner to relieve any discomfort or pain you feel associated with the laser hair removal treatment.

Oral pain-killers can be taken before the session, given time to become effective. They should take the "edge off" any discomfort. Likewise anaesthetic creams can be applied to the treatment area and left to take effect before the session. Another pre-session treatment may be the application of ice to the area, applied just before the treatment will numb the area.

Some lasers have built in cooling devices or the practitioner can choose from a range of cooling devices and systems for use during or immediately after the session. Cooling the skin will minimise the discomfort of the treatment.

Finally your practitioner can alter the settings on the laser if you really cannot stand the discomfort. A lower power laser will make the pain more tolerable for you but may be detrimental to the results of the sessions.
