The seated cable row, scapular mechanics

Seated Cable Row-Scapular Mechanics

Seated Cable Row-Scapular Mechanics

Scapular dyskinsesia (altered scapular movement) is common during many functional movement patterns our clients perform. Achieving ideal scapular mechanics is the key to improving functional shoulder strength, relieving discomfort, and enhancing performance.

First, it is necessary for us to understand what ideal scapular mechanics are during pulling patterns and then how to train that function into our clients.

During efficient shoulder motion, the scapula must posteriorly tilt and upwardly rotate to enable the arm to achieve a stabilized position. Whether performing a pushing or pulling pattern, we want to create posterior tilting of the scapula and stabilization along the wall of the thorax. This ensures a stable platform for the glenohumeral joint to push or pull against.

When this stability is lost, several common postural and movement dysfunctions will result including:

* Anterior tilting and winging of the scapula;

* Poor control of the scapula during the eccentric phases of the exercise (also known as scapular dysrhythmia);

* Over-use of the neck muscles to aid stabilization of the scapula.

And we often cue our clients into dysfunctional scapular stabilization during common shoulder exercises such as cable and dumbbell rows by cuing our clients to 'pull your shoulder blades down and back' or 'squeeze your shoulder blades together.'

Recall, achieving optimal scapular stabilization requires the scapula to posteriorly tilt and upwardly rotate. The aforementioned cues teach scapular adduction and downward rotation - the exact opposite of what we are looking to achieve.

What could have been a great exercise for scapular stabilization is now a direct contributor to scapular instability and potential shoulder and neck problems.

However, as you saw in the last video, this problem is easily modified with a few small adjustments and cues.

Check out this video to see how to improve your client's scapular stabilization in the seated row. http://fitnesseducationseminars.com/seated_cable_row.htm

CONCLUSION

The seated row is an excellent pattern to train the stabilizers of the trunk, spine, and shoulder. Proper mechanics during the pattern are essential for both improving scapular dyskinsesia and conditioning the shoulder complex. Help your client stabilize their scapula and utilize the row pattern to engrain the proper stabilization position during pulling patterns.
