The tradition of the Garter

The tradition of tossing the bride's garter at her wedding dates back to the Dark Ages, when guests would actually accompany the bride and groom to their bedroom and obtain the garter as proof of consummation. This was obviously not appreciated very much by most couples, so instead the groom would remove the garter during the reception and toss it into the crowd. It is said that just like the bouquet toss, whoever catches the garter will be the next to marry!

Wearing a garter on your wedding day is a small way to make the bride feel fun and beautiful. Bridal garters used to be traditionally white. But these days, brides are letting their personality shine through the type of garter that they choose to wear. A wild bride might choose a leopard or a polka-dotted garter, while a more simple bride might choose one with lace, flowers, or bows. It is also very common to use the color scheme of your wedding to help you choose which garter is right for you!

Monogram garters are extremely popular these days. You can specially order your garter to read the date of your wedding, your fianc's name, your initials, or anything else to make it more personal. Incorporating something unique and personal between you and your future husband is a great way to make the day even more special. For example, if you both met while in college, find a garter with your school's colors! Even picking a fun, bright color will add a little character to your wedding gown.

Some brides are opposed to the garter toss, as they would like a special memento from their wedding day to save or to pass on to someone else. This is why it is becoming more and more common for brides to actually wear two garters under their dress: one to keep and one to throw into the crowd. This gives you the opportunity to save the garter that has some sort of meaning to you and still keep the tossing tradition.

Even more recent additions to the tradition of the toss is that the groom uses his teeth to remove the garter from his bride's thigh, as well as having the man who caught the garter place it on the thigh of the woman who caught the bouquet. While these new trends are a little more modern, you can always stick to the original garter tossing traditions!
