The weather at Poas Volcano
Weather is always a concern when you go on vacation
. No more so than when you are venturing to a destination where a lot of activities are offered outdoors or there is a beach involved.
Costa Rica is one of those destinations that has a lot to offer but has also got very varied weather patterns.
Poas Volcano in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica is the most visited national park in the country, one of the most visited volcanoes in the country and also boasts one of the most easily accessible craters in the world. It is even accessible by wheelchair!
Poas volcano national park is just 45 minutes from the international airport and an hour from San Jose. Its proximity to these major centres makes it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Weather at Poas Volcano can be unpredictable at times but you can rely on the mornings being clear, therefore it is very important to arrive at the park when it opens at 8 in the morning.
The best option for ensuring you have the maximum chance of seeing the crater clearly is to stay in the area so that you can avoid the morning rush hour on your way up to the volcano.
Many visitors to Costa Rica do not realise that although the country is very small, it can take hours to drive even a short distance because of poor road conditions and congestion. As a result, most people who elect to stay in San Jose or near the airport, take longer than expected to make their way up to the park and a result, never get to see Poas volcano's amazing crater.
Cloud cover and thick mist is the main culprit for hiding the mile wide crater. Rain and high winds can also make the experience challenging, but again, these tend to start later in the day.
Even in the rainy season, when Poas has a surprisingly pleasant climate overall, it is possible to enjoy the huge crater and surrounding park at your leisure, before any rain starts, if you arrive early.
Poas Volcano's highest point is at 8800 feet above sea level, so it expected to be cooler than the central valley and it advisable to take a light jacket when you visit the park.
Poas Volcano is one of the must see sights in Costa Rica and makes a perfect first or last day activity because of its proximity to the airport and surrounding cities. Stay in the area and enjoy a front row seat to one of the biggest and certainly the most accessible active volcanic craters in the world.
If you stay in the area and arrive early, you not only have the advantage of being able to see the crater in all its glory, you will also be ahead of the tour busses and have the park almost entirely to yourself. This is important since Poas Volcano national park can receive in excess of a thousand visitors a day.
Getting there early and beating the crowds makes the experience all the more enjoyable and gives you a smug sense of accomplishment, seeing the tour busses driving up to the crater as you drive away from the crater as it clouds over.
A few options exist near the summit of Poas volcano. None stands out more than Poas Lodge which is perched in such a way that it offers the most spectacular view of the central valley from its beautiful
cabinas.
