Therapy For Troubled Teens
When parents are faced with challenging troubled teens exhibiting chronic
, self-defeating behavior, they may need to turn to an adolescent residential treatment program. A program such as Island View that utilizes a variety of options and avenues of therapy for troubled teens, seeks to build healthy futures through an unparalleled treatment program. The center asks adolescents to build upon their strengths, abandon self-defeating behaviors, understand their unique issues and gifts and accept help.
Clinical services provided by in-house professional staff, are core elements of treatment for residents at Island View. The therapy for troubled teens that is provided is done so by a carefully selected, credentialed group of professionals. Recognizing that each resident is unique, a customized, individual treatment plan is prepared for each youth. The different therapy options provided for troubled teens in the program include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and art therapy, as well as participation in specialty groups.
Individual
therapy for troubled teens is a regularly scheduled formalized psychotherapeutic session held at least once a week. Individual therapy seeks to improve the overall level of adaptive functioning and takes on significant value in issues of a private nature that the resident may feel ill-prepared to take to a group setting.
Group therapy is held in a small group format two to three times per week. Therapist driven process and problem solving groups are also held weekly. Group therapy is often more effective with troubled teens than individual therapy. Residents encourage each others positive behaviors and confront negative and/or self-defeating ones. Peer feedback can be far more powerful than the expert opinion of a professional, or well-intended parent or adult.
Family therapy is an integral part of treatment for troubled teens. Residential treatment does not only involve the child but his or her family as well in the process of change. All residents and their families participate in weekly family therapy either at the center, or via conference telephone calls.
Additional therapies, including DBT, art therapy and participation in applicable specialty groups are also utilized to benefit troubled teens. Specialty groups may include: Chemical abuse/dependency Group, Grief and Loss Group, Adoption Group, Mens Issues Group, Womens Issues Group, and Social Skills Group.
A combination of therapy treatments as indicated by their individualized treatment plans help troubled teen residents develop communication and relationship skills, strengthen personal identity and foster pro-social attitudes and behaviors. The goal of Island View is to help troubled teens in crisis to overcome their full spectrum of personal obstacles and become whole again. A carefully selected assortment of services, therapies and interventions help troubled teens make desired changes in their lives.
