There Are A Lot Of Fascinating Things To See In Royston - Hertfordshire

The active market town of Royston - Hertfordshire is situated in the northern section of Hertfordshire

. Central London is just 69 km away. The town's economy is derived from many light industry operations which create employment opportunities for the residents. A 2001 census established a population of 14,500.

Royston's history spans two millennia. In Roman times, the town was an important crossing point for Icknield Way and Ermine Street, two major roads. Icknield Way was a primitive route that followed the sloping chalk hills. Today, the lines and patterns of these roads are still visible.

During the Norman occupation of the region, a Lady Roysia set up a curbside cross at the intersection of the two roads. The cross has since perished, but the stone base remained intact and is now displayed near the intersection. It was called Roysia's Stone. The town was therefore named Royston.

The town lies on the border that separates Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The surrounding towns are Baldock, Letchworth, Cambridge and Hertford. The Royston Museum provides a fascinating history of this medieval town. There are many collections and memorabilia from bygone days, along with an impressive display of 19th Century glass and ceramics.

The museum is also home to another intriguing project, The Royston Tapestry. This is still a work in progress. When it is finally finished, the tapestry will be an amazing 110 feet in length. The idea came from a previous curator, Jane Vincent, who wanted the town to show off its history in an eye-catching and imaginative way. The tapestry can be viewed by the public in the front section of the museum.

Another unique attraction is the Royston Cave. The only other cave similar to it is in Czechoslovakia. It has a bell-shaped, circular chamber that is covered with pagan carvings. The cave's origins are not known, but it is believed that the Knights Templar used it during the 13th Century. It was rediscovered accidentally in 1742 by a man digging a hole.

Another must-see local attraction is Wimpole Hall which is 6 miles from Royston. On the estate is a magnificent mansion designed by Elsie Bambridge. Her father was Rudyard Kipling, the famed English writer and poet.

There is no shortage of entertainment establishments in Royston - Hertfordshire. Tourists can enjoy many excellent pubs, restaurants, a movie house, clubs, and music bars. Shopping centers are modern, but there are some lovely little shops which reflect Royston's early days. Accommodation ranges from B&Bs, cottages and hotels, to camp sites and caravan parks.
