There are a variety of complications and side effects that may occur with liposuction surgeries

. Some of these complications or side effects can be avoided or planned for and others will be a unforeseen. They may affect the overall outcome of the patient's surgery.

These complications can include infections, puncture wounds in the organs, pooling of serum, nerve compression, changes in sensation (parasthesis), or permanent numbness. Other possible problems may be visible scars, dimples, abnormal body contours, results that don't look natural, burns (from ultrasound assisted lipo), skin necrosis (skin death), anesthesia toxicity, serious swelling which can persist for weeks or months.

Scars, bruising, and swelling are the most common side effects that happen for every patient. After liposuction swelling and lumpiness usually take several months to disappear completely. Even though the side effects take time to recover from most patients are happy with their new shape and their results.

It is not uncommon for swelling to settle in the patient's knees, ankles, labia, or scrotum. It is good for the patient to begin moving around as soon as they can to help reduce the swelling. This also helps to prevent blood clots in the legs.

It is important to inform the surgeon of any excess swelling that is occurring. Also if the patient has noticed any unusual swelling the surgeon needs to know immediately. It is important that the surgeon is kept informed of any changes I the amount of swelling or other side effects that the patient is experiencing.

If there is increases in swelling it is often a warning sign of other complications. Doctor-patient communication is extremely important in order to maximize liposuction results and minimize recovery time. This is the best way to avoid any extreme problems.

Bruising is one of the more minor side effects of liposuction. It happens in every case. The area may be tender and it may cause some pain but it is frequently the most short-lived side effect. Often times, bruises will fade away in as little as one month from the surgery date.

Bruising usually occurs, but depending on the technique the surgeon uses it can be minimized. Bruises and scars can be minimized with proper care during and after surgery.

There may be a lumpy appearance in the area that the fat was removed from. This is a natural side effect that will usually clear up after six months or so. If the liposuction was performed on the upper thigh then the patient may experience what is called thrombophlebitis, or inflammation of the veins, in that area. These too will pass in time.
