Thinking Of Restoring Or Resurfacing Your Fiberglass Swimming Pool?

With summer coming up, those with backyard pools begin to dream of cooling off on a hot day in a beautiful and pristine pool

. You open your fiberglass pool to prepare it for the season. You notice a few cracks, some chipping and flaking, and decide that this project is small enough to tackle yourself. You do some research by check out some websites and they make it sound easy enough and describe the product as durable enough so you go ahead and order the necessary materials. All the goods arrive, though you forgot to order a breathing mask. You need to go out and purchase one. This is very important with fiberglass, in fact there are some known health issues with resurfacing fiberglass pools.

Now you are ready to dive in (pun intended) and start your little pool resurfacing project. Pretty soon you've discovered that you need gloves from all the splinters you're getting and a long sleeved shirt to help with the burning and itching. You've progressed pretty well, covering a quarter of the pool in a day but you realize that you probably have to take next weekend to finish the task. Now you're seeing these weird bubbles appear and part of the pool surface is uneven so you need to figure out what to do about those. You jump back onto the Internet to see how to deal with the bubbles and you note that there are many people complaining about those same issues. You also notice that any warranty the company offered when pools are installed does not cover any do it yourself repairs. Although this is news, you press on to complete what you have started.

The following weekend, the weather is getting pretty warm, and you've recruited a couple of your buddies to help speed up the process. One of them suggests an angle grinder to get rid of the bumps. Since you don't own one, off to the hardware store you go while your friends continue the tedious labor. Upon your return, you notice that your friends are exhausted and frustrated and angry with you for roping them in to this crazy scheme. Someone mentions, through a sweat soaked breathing mask, that hiring a professional to do the job would have been a much better idea.

It's not a pretty story, despite the comic imagery, but it is a common one. Fiberglass pools have a lot of benefits. They can require lower maintenance, can be more affordable, and tend to be easier (and quicker) to install. But when trouble does come, any claims for DIY pool restoration should be carefully weighed against the tedious work and potential health risks that can be involved.
