Thinking of ways to stop smoking?? Zyban (Wellbutrin) can definitely assist

We have all heard about how smoking is injurious to health. In fact, in the United States, it is said that the deaths due to smoking exceed the combined deaths from murders, suicides, HIV, traffic accidents, substance abuse and excessive alcohol consumption. But it is never quite clear on how smoking actually affects a person. Various methods are suggested for quitting the habit of smoking, for example, users are encouraged to buy Bupropion (Zyban) and such quit smoking' medications.

Smoking and Cancer - more hype than substance?

No, the voice against smoking is not just a gimmick. Various cancers are directly credited to smoking and these include cancers of the food pipe, gastrointestinal tract, larynx, renal, bladder, cervix, lungs, pancreas and pharynx. Smoking also causes acute myeloid leukemia and is considered to have a major role to play in colorectal and hepatic cancers. The way smoking affects a smoker can be broadly divided in a three-tier process: the carcinogens that cause cancer get entry inside the body; these carcinogens attach themselves to the human genetic structure (DNA) and finally, mutations that seem to group together and give rise to further cancerous growths.

Every inward draft of cigarette exposes the body to more than 60 carcinogens of varying chemical classes. These include metals, aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines and highly reactive hydrocarbons. Cytochrome P-450 enzymes react with the carcinogens to form chemicals that can react with the human DNA. So when the genes, the basic elements of life, mutate, it results in an uncontrolled rise of cell populations. This unusual cell population explosion is called cancer.

Carcinogen effects - Tar in your body!!

Lets elaborate further on the cigarette smoke's destructive nature on the human body and understand how carcinogens affect the body. Some studies have inferred that around 1.4 to 2.2 mg of carcinogen is inhaled through each cigarette. PAH are actually partially burnt byproducts that are also found in coal tar. What it basically means, is that there is a direct ingestion of tar-like substance. These are the same compounds that form a major part of automobile engine exhaust, soot, tar, etc. PAH usually develop tumors of trachea, lungs and mammary glands.

N-nitrosamines are a group of deadly carcinogens that act on specific tissues, depending on their composition. Some cause tumors in the liver, nose or the pancreas, whereas others affect the food pipe, lungs and the respiratory tracts. Aromatic amines are carcinogens that were first detected as reasons for cancer and they specifically target the human bladder. Similarly, aldehydes, catechol, caffeic acid and many other carcinogens that enter the body through cigarette smoking, are known to cause glandular abdominal tumors, renal cell tumors, etc.

Prevention is better than cure - kick butt

Hence, it is vital to understand the need of quitting the habit of smoking. The most effective thing is to make the smoker understand the consequences. Unless the smoker wants to kick butt, there is nothing much that can actually have any effect. Doctors may recommend smokers to buy Zyban (Bupropion - Wellbutrin) or similar such medications, but unless the need of change doesn't come from within the smoker, there are very low chances of improvement. Medications like generic Bupropion (Zyban) may cause relief, but unless the user takes them regularly, even such effective medications may not help.
