Located in the Madurai city of India is the Thirumalai Nayak Palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak in the year of 1636. Created with the assistance of an illustrious Italian architect, it can be referred to as a classic fusion of Islamic, Dravidian and European styles. Today's remaining striking structure was the main palace home to the king. But the original palace complex is said to have been about four times the size of the presently existing structure. In its heyday, the palace was regarded as one of the wonders in the city. The palace had included two main parts namely Rangavilasa and Swargavilasa where the royal residence, shrine, theatre, apartments, palanquin place, armoury, quarters, royal bandstand, garden and pond were situated.

A classic example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture back in the day, the palace features two major attractions namely the dancing hall and the courtyard. King Thirumalai Nayak had celebrated festivals such as Navarathri, Masi, Chithirai, Float festival and Sceptre festival in the premises of the palace.

A rectangular court yard bordered by tall arcades can be seen at the main palace, each bearing a unique carving. The arches are supported by pillars which are connected to the foliate brickwork. The embellishment is of exquisite stucco. Atop the pavilions on either side of the courtyard, are finials painted with gold.

A square building made of black stone can be seen to the west with an extraordinary dome-shaped hall. It is said that a festooned throne was once installed here to be graced by the king during the festivities of Navaratra. The palace was declared a national monument after the independence and is presently under the guard of the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department.
