Three Different Ways To Use Your Gap Year Wisely
Gap years can be filled with all sorts of exciting prospects
, from travelling and gap year volunteering, to work experience and learning a new skill. There are many reasons why people take a year out - from career breaks and being offered redundancy or gardening leave, to after college to decide what the next stage will be. The point is whether its by choice or not, it can be the most unforgettable life-changing time. Here are a few ideas about what to do on a gap year:
Work Experience
After college the one thing that every student needs is work experience. This usually means starting at the bottom in a company doing something that doesnt appeal much but offers the opportunity to get a taste of what the role youre aiming for is like. Even though these jobs arent often fun, they give a great grounding in basic working environment etiquette and set you up for your first role. Work experience can be paid or voluntary but take the opportunity if it arises as its difficult to get good placements. To secure a placement in the first place use social media to follow or befriend people in your chosen sector, then try to develop any sort of relationship so when you do ask for a placement its not out of the blue and you can use examples of work they have done or show that you understand what is going on in the industry.
Gap Year Volunteering
This can be a great way to gain some research and conservation experience or classroom experience. Often, but not always, these programs are organised by charitable foundations who plan the program and you can choose which one suits your gap year volunteering needs. They also run from one week to one year so there is a good level of flexibility. There are even some where you can teach, travel and help with conservation-monitoring all in one program. While traveling abroad and working in a completely new environment you will learn new skills as well as discovering traits about yourself that you werent aware of.
Learning Something New
It could be that you have been given gardening leave from your last job and the windfall of money has been enough to allow you to reassess what you want to do for the rest of your life. This could be a completely different direction or it could be developing knowledge so you can aim higher in the career ladder. Looking into university courses, distance learning courses, local colleges and even
volunteer work abroad where you can learn and work. Ensure that your chosen route will lead to what you are aiming for, ask professionals in the role youd like to apply for if they would advise it, and also ask the college or University what jobs their graduates achieve.
