One well-known movie horse didn't actually exist! ' A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!' is Richard III's cry when he desperately needs a horse to escape from those who would kill him on Bosworth Field. The horses in these movies are, however, a far cry from Shakespeare's evil Richard and the horse - any horse - he so desperately needed. The sheer expendability of both man and horse in Richard III's time would have certainly made modern inventions like horse insurance beyond the financial reach even of the highest nobility!

The Black Stallion Produced in 1979 - some 400 years after Shakespeare - this film deservedly won many awards. The unfolding relationship between Alec and a vigorous Arabian stallion forms the basis of this movie. It includes a shipwreck, the rescue of the drowning Alec by the horse, and a period of slowly developing mutual trust on a desert island. Soon this trust is so complete that they can't exist without each other. Just how attached a horse and a man can be is brilliantly shown. I'll refrain from telling you what happens because maybe you haven't seen it yet. It's sufficient to record one critic's opinion, that it was perhaps 'the greatest children's movie ever made'.' That doesn't mean you have to be a child to enjoy it.

Black Beauty Does a horse have to be black?. Would you be excited at the title 'Piebald Beauty'?. Anyway, whereas we see the Black Stallion from the outside as observers, Black Beauty is herself the narrator in this 1994 production. One of the problems is that the voice shows no signs of reflecting an equine outlook. I don't mean that it doesn't neigh and whinny like a horse; such a practice would soon empty any cinema. No, it's what the horse says and how it's said that grates. The human that Black Beauty portrays is that of a self-satisfied and rather smug person. This anthropomorphism simply doesn't work. If you can ignore what a critic called 'soppiness', you can certainly enjoy the great scenes of Montana and of Black Beauty's athleticism.

The Horse Whisperer This film was issued 4 years later, in 1998. It tells us how a young girl, Grace, and her beloved horse, Pilgrim, recover from a traumatic accident. Annie, Grace's mother, wants to find a way to bring about the recovery of Grace and Pilgrim so she takes them to Montana where Tom, known for his understanding of animals, lives in open country. It is not only with horses that Tom can form close bonds; it's with troubled women as well. Tom soon has both Annie and Pilgrim doting on him. The contrast between Annie's previous sophisticated city life and that of the country is a theme that is developed alongside the story of Grace and Pilgrim's recovery and the growing love between Annie and Tom. On the one hand is Tom, the plain horse whisperer, on the other is the suave lawyer; Annie must choose one of them. Which of these will she choose?!

These horse movies will provide you with plenty of moving horses - trotting, cantering and galloping, as well as moving moments. The delight you'll feel at many of the lovely scenic sequences will be in contrast to some of the sickly sentiment of the 'moving' scenes. These movies are not, however, only about horses; each also conveys a message.
