When it comes to marketing, organisations in the Third Sector has a tougher time than most. Their budgets are inevitably tighter and their message is often lost in the crowd or marketing messages out there.

So, here are three marketing tips that might seem obvious for most, but can be used very effectively by the Third Sector for free:

1. Press Releases

A good press release is a great marketing tool because it gives you the opportunity to let potential supporters know about the cause you are working for and what you are doing differently.

Think about your local daily newspaper not only do a large proportion of residents buy them but they are also in every day places such as coffee shops and waiting rooms. People will pick them up to fill the time a great time to tell them something they might not know otherwise about your organisation.

Lots of newspapers and magazines are glad to have content sent to them, rather than having to go and search for it. You can usually find an email address for the editor or news contact online.

If you don't know where to start with writing a press release you can find a good guide on WikiHow by searching for how to write a press release'.

Remember, ask a friend or colleague to proofread it before you send it as spelling and grammar mistakes could be considered a bad reflection of your organisation.

2. Social Media

There are lots of social media platforms out there, but the main contenders in the UK are Twitter and Facebook.

Twitter is free to sign up and very simple to use. Messages you broadcast are called "Tweets". Tweet about recent news or achievements from your organisation, events you are holding or anything you think might make those following you donate or spread the word about what you are doing.

Facebook is another means of communicating with an existing audience. You can create a Page for your company outlining what you do and who your organisation is.

Using both, you can communicate with a ready audience.

3. YouTube

YouTube is huge with hundred of thousands of people tuning in every day. A video blog is a great way of connecting with those supporting your organisation. You can keep them updated with how you are using their donations if you run a charity or you can show the progress your organisation is making.

Jing is a great piece of software that allows you to film what is on your computer screen. So if you don't want to personally appear in your video blog, you can film what you are doing on your screen.
