Three Keys To A Healthy Pond: Fish, Plants And Water

Ponds - whether they're man-made or natural - exist in a park

, neighborhood or in the garden of your home and can be everything from a scenic spot to relax by, a spot where one can enjoy the ambiance, or a place where you house and enjoy aquatic animals and wildlife. But just like anything else that exists in nature (i.e., flowers, plants, your lawn), ponds need to be properly cared for to ensure that plants and fish continue to thrive and exist in a healthy environment. The last thing you want is a pond overgrown with algae and other invasive plant species that make it a more desirable place for snakes and other creatures that could do more harm than good. Thankfully, caring for your pond isn't too complex. There are various pond algae solutions that you can use to troubleshoot certain conditions, and other measures you can take to ensure that your fish, plants and other pond life thrive in a small environment.

Good Water

Water is the foundation of any pond. And having good water can make a huge difference. If you have an artificial pond, consider installing a water filtration system, which will help with pond algae control. However, if it's a natural pond, you should frequently test the water to make sure that its ph levels are healthy. If water is reading in at unhealthy ph levels, treat it with chemicals or change it completely to make sure that it becomes healthy again. This will ensure that your plants and wildlife continue to flourish.

Good Plants

Plants also play an important part in the ecosystem of a pond. Aside from providing shade and shelter from the sun for marine life, plants also help maintain the balance of a healthy pond. For instance, did you know that plants play a large role in removing toxins from the water? They do! That's why it's important to have more than just fish and marine life in your pond, as plants "complete the circle" of a healthy ecosystem in your pond, so to speak.

Good Fish

In order to have healthy fish, you need to have healthy water quality. But aside from the entertainment value that fish contribute to in a pond, they're also good for the overall health of the pond. Case in point: Fish add nutrition to the pond, and also play a role in helping your pond's plants flourish in the aquatic environment. However, you need to know the amount of fish that your pond volume will take comfortably, especially if it's a man-made pond, due to the fact that a crowded pond could limit the oxygen that each fish requires to survive. This could lead to an increased death rate of the fish in your pond, which could in turn, throw off the balance of your pond's ecosystem. Plants and fish need each other to thrive, and dramatic changes to either could be detrimental to the overall

health of the pond.
