Three Kinds Of Eye Care Professionals

During your life, you may often visit eye care professionals

, for example doing eye exam, purchasing eye glasses, having eye cure and so on. You may meet different kinds of eye care professionals giving you different kinds of eye care. There are mainly three kinds of them, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians. What are the differences between these three kinds of eye care professionals? What exactly each kind of them do to offer you vision improvement?

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors specializes in eye and vision care. This kind of eye doctors get a long period of education, besides eight years in medical school, they also have a year of internship and a minimum of three years residency in hospital. They can offer you fully care for your eyes including eye exams, prescribing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses, and diagnosing and treating eye diseases. And they are the only kind of eye doctors who are licensed to perform eye surgeries. There are two kinds of ophthalmologists, medical doctor (MD) and doctors of osteopathy (DO).

Optometrists are eye medical doctors who have been trained and earned the doctor of optometry degree after completing a four-year college degree program in the sciences, and a four-year post-graduate training in optometry school. They can offer most of the same eye care services as ophthalmologist, such as doing eye exams, diagnosing and treating eye diseases including glaucoma and cataracts, prescribing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses and medications. However, compared with ophthalmologists, they do not have a medical degree, so they do not have the ability to solve more complex issues especially eye surgeries. If they can"t cure your eye problems, they will probably introduce you to an ophthalmologist.

Besides these two kinds of eye doctors, there are opticians. Opticians are not eye doctors, but they can assist both ophthalmologists and optometrists in caring a person's vision. They have earned a two-year technical degree and can use the prescriptions written by an eye doctor to fit eyeglasses or contact lenses for you. And they can also help doing eye exam.

All of the three kinds of eye care professionals play important part in offering you a good vision. You are recommended to visit your eye doctors at least once a year for an eye exam to make sure your eyes are in good health condition.
