The first thing a lot of people who want to start an online business ask me is "What
niche should I go into?" My initial answer is to make sure you choose a niche where people are already buying information products or they're seeking things that they can't find it.
I go on to explain that you need to choose a niche where people are emotionally motivated and activated. There's passion. There's pain and urgency. They've gotten off their bums and to the point where they're pro-actively looking for solutions. They have few or no perceived options.
Then, the question I usually hear next is "Okay, now where exactly do I apply that?" Partly that depends on what your interests are, of course. But I would like to share with you what I call "The Three Mega-Niches of Information Products." These are the three proven areas where most information products and book sales that are roughly classified as "how-to" or "self-help" or "personal development" succeed.
The first one is Money and Business. This is a great category to start an online business in. It can be anything from how to get out of debt to how to hire people in your business, how to invest, or anything in the money, business and finance world.
I think this is such a great category because it's so easy to explain the value proposition of what you're selling. The potential return on investment is clear.
For example, you might have a book on how to pay off your mortgage in fifteen years instead of thirty. This is going to save you an average of $250,000. You sell the book for $20. It's really not hard to be confident in telling people, "You should buy this, because you're going to give me $20 bucks and I'm going to save you a quarter of a million."
It all boils down to money. It's easy to figure it out, to translate and explain. That's why money and business is a great niche for information marketing. Prospects tend to be worth a lot of money, too, and they convert very highly.
The second mega-niche is Health and Fitness. This one is a very important because if you don't have your health, you don't have anything.
As soon as a health issue comes up, people immediately start looking for a solution. They'll be very motivated. They are more than willing to pay for answers. And there's an aspect of health and fitness that's not about pain and problems. It's the new side of health called "wellness." This is a hot area for information marketing right now, too.
Then the third mega-niche is Dating and Relationships. This is powerful because right from birth all of us come wired to seek a mate.
There are a lot of challenges to finding a mate in the current environment. Meeting a potential mate, evolving a relationship, getting your mate to commit to you, keeping your relationship good, and fixing your relationship when it goes badall of these different aspects are very powerful.
For a long time I kept asking myself, "Why are these three mega-niches so important? Why do they make up most of the sales of information products?" Then, after much reflection, I realized it's based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which we've all seen at school.
At the bottom of Maslow's pyramid are needs like security and survival, things that are life threatening. We're trying to stay safe. Then you move up to needs like love and affection. Up in the higher levels you get things like self-expression and actualization of yourself.
The foundation of all these needs is money, health, and relationships. If you don't have these, then nothing else matters. But if you've got money, health, and relationships, your life feels great. You can deal with just about anything.
So as soon as one of the three isn't working in your life, it becomes the focus. People buy things to solve problems of money, health, and relationships. And that's why these are the three mega-niches where you'll be most successful in information marketing.
