Three Ways to Improve Your Stairs

The stairs are an odd area for a decorator. There is no room for furniture. Paint changes to a stairway usually have to be taken through to the rest of the room. Most of the small tips and tricks most are used to using simply fall flat on the area. There are a number of fixes that can change the very character of a stair well, and thankfully they do not actually involve replacing the stairs themselves. While the changes do take a bit more time than merely changing around furniture, the very character of this hard to modify area of the home can be changed for the better.

CARPET: CHANGE IT OR LOSE IT

Carpeted stairs can be changed just as easily as any other carpeted area--and in many ways, even more easily. When going from hardwood area to hardwood area, it can be as simple as a few good cuts to remove carpeting. Replacing it requires some precision, but the end product leaves the stairway with a completely different character.

Of course, one can always choose to remove the carpet completely. With constantly dropping prices on hard wood and the advent of very wood-like laminate, there is no reason a formerly carpeted staircase cannot become a marvelous wooden showpiece. Best of all, this allows a home owner to ignore currently existing carpet, so no changes have to be made for the rest of the house.

WROUGHT IRON RAILINGS

Wrought iron railings are a great addition to any stairwell that is open to the rest of the house. By replacing traditional wooden rails, one can get a classic feeling that can otherwise be missing from the home. These railings are generally easy to install, though there will be some effort needed to remove previously existing rails. By the end of the process, one can completely transform the character of a stairwell.

WALL DECOR

Wall decorations are the quickest, easiest way to change around the decor of a stairwell. Be it shelving, family pictures, or even artwork, these are the quick and simple solutions to a decorator's dilemma. Of course, this does little to actually change around the character of the area, though it can make a minor and helpful change. This is one of the best possible ways to alter a stairwell without spending a great deal of time or money. It may not do much to change the house itself, but it can be a welcome break from standard decor.

One's stairwell does not have to be a boring area in the home. By changing the flooring, railings, or even wall hangings, one can give new life to the an otherwise problematic area of the home. By making a few different changes, this overlooked area can be a joyous part of one's domicile, and a decorator can focus on more pressing challenges.
