Three interesting stories about how the web can help you maintain sanity and privacy

When telemarketing goes from annoying to awful

Frida G. is really positive about her phone lookup experience. "I can't recommend it more it saved my sanity and peace of mind." It all started as a minor thing. Calls every few weeks from a number she didn't recognize. As Frida tells us, "it was easy to just hang up the phone when it rang." It turns out that's a big no-no. Many telemarketing systems actually take your hangup as a good sign, illustrating that someone is home and telling them when you're home. Frida fell right into their trap and was soon getting 4 or 5 calls a week.

She stopped picking up the phone but it was too late to undo the damage. The calls were coming more often and after about a month of ignoring the calls she was beginning to lose sleep. The calls were coming rapidly 3 and 4 a day, the phone ringing at 9 am, 5 pm, sometimes even as late as 8 pm. "It was ruining meals, time with my kids, everything. I HATED the sound of my phone ringing and just disconnected it for a couple days," she tells us.

Finally, Frida had had enough. She wanted the calls to stop and didn't know what to do, so she started asking for friends' recommendations. One of them pointed her to a site she'd never heard of: http://reversephones.com and she visited it. "I was skeptical at first, I'll admit, but I had no other options, so I tried it out." She searched for the 2 common numbers that were calling her and decided it was worth it to pay for the information about the owners behind them. Surprisingly easily, she was able to contact the companies behind the telemarketing patterns and gave them a serious tongue-lashing. "The $12 it cost me for those reverse phone lookups was a pittance compared to getting my sanity and peace of mind back. My family and I are SO glad to have a quiet household again. You can bet if I get another call, I'll be tracking them down on Reversephonesright away!".

Sometimes insecurity and jealousy just need to be answered with facts

Jason Y. isn't exactly proud about his story, but he's sharing it because he hopes it can help some other folks out. "I was newly married, jealous and nervous. I'm glad I just didn't do any damage to our marriage and was able to figure out what was going on," he tells us. It all started out when his wife's mobile phone would ring at odd times. She'd dismiss the calls, saying it was a wrong number. That wasn't enough to stop Jason from imagining things, however. Newly married and insecure, Jason started picturing something nefarious - an affair and a strange man on the other end of the call. Jason got it into his head that his wife wasn't being faithful and the ongoing stream of strange calls didn't do anything to alleviate his insecurity.

One night, after his wife had gone to bed, Jason took her mobile phone and went online, in search of answers. Laptop in hand, Jason visited a site a colleague had told him about: http://reversephones.com. Looking through his wife's call log, he found one unidentified number that had called more than once and decided that must belong to his wife's secret paramour. A few short minutes later, Jason had what he was sure was the name of his wife's caller-in-waiting: Zachary.

Gathering up his thoughts and courage, Jason called this man, prepared to confront the person he assumed was breaking up his marriage. When the phone picked up and the voice on the other end answered and sounded old and slurred, Jason was taken aback. He scaled back his approach, for the first time doubting his assumptions. He asked Zachary a few questions about why he'd been making calls to his wife's phone. Confused, the old man professed innocence and then helped Jason figure out what was actually happening: Zachary had been trying to call a local pharmacy that had published its number on its website. As it turns out, they had mixed up 2 of the numbers and in the process were referring people to call Jason's wife's number. Mystery solved!

Jason tells us, "When I figured that out I must have laughed hard for about 30 seconds. The relief and realization that all of these things I'd been imagining were untrue was a bit overwhelming. I apologized to Zachary and thanked him for his help in figuring out what was going on." The next day, Jason called the pharmacy up and informed them of the mistake, which they quickly corrected. Now, Jason and his wife are free of calls intended for the local pharmacy.

Jason finished his interview with us with a laugh and some advice, "Well, I'm really happy that my insecurities weren't confirmed, but what I'm really happy about is that I didn't go off the deep end without the real information. Reversephones saved me from myself and now my wife and I can joke about this instead of fighting over it."

Use the web to get information and empower yourself

Jenny F.'s story is pretty simple and happens all too often really: her phone number ended up in the hands of someone who was more than a little off-balance and who thought he could impose his will upon her.

"I was at a cocktail hour with some friends and got in a strange argument with this random guy. I thought it was over but he just wouldn't leave me alone. He kept trying to prove me wrong and I just wanted him to leave it and me. It was so annoying that I finally gave up and just left."

Unfortunately for Jenny, that wasn't the end of her encounter with this overeager debater. Strangely, one of her friends thought it was ok to pass along Jenny's number to the stranger when he realized she'd left. The next day, Jenny started receiving text messages from a number she didn't recognize and then, phone calls. Ignoring them was her first approach, but, "That didn't work. After a day of ignoring them, I picked up the phone, asked who it was and when I realized it was this weirdo from the bar, I told him point blank to leave me alone. I was polite but firm, because I was annoyed. It didn't work!" Instead, Mr. Persistent continued for 4 days before Jenny really lost it.

"I couldn't get him to stop by asking nicely or telling him to stop and I realized that I didn't even know his name, so when I called the info line at the police, they told me I needed to be more specific. I was so frustrated!" On the advice of her friends, Jenny took the odd guy's number and input it into a reverse phone lookup site, happy to pay for his full information. "I got his name and his address and then called him up, right away. I said I knew who he was, that I'd talked to the cops and if he didn't stop RIGHT AWAY, I'd file a report. That did it.. he hasn't called me since! He immediately took me seriously and I never have to hear from him again."Empowered by her reverse phone lookup, Jenny says she's telling all of her friends about the experience so that they know what to do when some creepy guy starts bothering them.

Information is power. Phone number information is power - readily accessible

These are but three stories that we hear from people on a regular basis after having a successful experience with a phone lookup site. If you're dealing with an annoying caller in your life or have some insecurity or concerns about who's calling your spouse's phone, the best thing to do is to quickly resolve it with the power of the Internet. Peace of mind is worth far more than the price of a phone lookup isn't it?
