Three tips that will help you build a high quality email list

Many website owners think that the larger their email lists are, the greater their sales will ultimately be. This is a misconception, since size alone doesn't dictate success. Having a lot of email addresses is pointless if only two users are going to buy whatever you have to offer! Hence while you are building an email list, you should aim to gather users who are relevant that have a real interest in your products/services.

Let's look at 3 tips that can help you generate quality leads when you are building a list.

Time your prompt for information properly

It's common practice to have your list opt-in box at the very start of your website since that is the immediate thing a visitor notices. While this could bump up your overall opt-ins, I have determined that I get more relevant leads if I place my email opt-in box after I have engaged the visitor and explained the benefits of my products/services. Visitors that take the initiative to really read your content and then elect to opt-in will make for greater leads. The golden rule: quality not quantity.

Ask users to confirm their subscription (double opt-in system)

In my experience I've found that visitors that provide their details, and then confirm their subscription through a double opt-in mechanism are always higher quality than single opt-in leads, because they have shown an actual passion in what you've provided. If a lead can't even be bothered confirming their subscription to your list, then chances are they won't buy what you're selling and therefore aren't a good addition to your list.

Use a Refer a Friend system

Word of mouth from someone you are close to is arguably the best form of advertising. Shortly after a user has opted into your list, you must provide them with the opportunity to tell their friends about it. Users are not going to tell their friends about a service that they don't care about, so a "Share via Email" scheme generally ensures more relevant leads.

These 3 tips should help increase the overall quality of the list that you build. Never forget that quality is the most important aspect!
