Tiger Hills By Sarita Mandanna: A Tribute To Coorg

The author of Tiger Hills, Sarita Mandanna, believes that every human being has the potential to tell a story, or to write a book

. She was in Coorg at the time of launch of the book, and the discussion session after reading session was conducted by the city based restaurateur, Arjun Sajnani. Right from the beginning, Sarita Mandanna said, she wanted to write with a wide (panoramic) view, and she confesses the story was not really in her mind when she started writing. It just took shape along the way as she wrote. It took her five years to write the book.

Life Doesnt Always Go Our Way

Sarita Mandanna is the daughter of an army officer, and she grew up in various parts of the country, though she had to visit her home town Coorg during every vacation. The book Tiger Hills, in a way, is her tribute to the town. The novel is set in 19th20th century, and the author explores the lifestyle of Coorg in those times. The incidents in the book are taken from both personal experiences and observations, which is the way most creative projects go. The reality of life is the main theme of the book, as the life doesnt always happen the way we want it to, says the author.

Slightly Predictable Story

We didnt feel the need to put a spoiler alert here while writing this piece, though. The reason was the story is slightly (very) predictable for our comfort. Devi is born in the first eight pages of the book, and since she is extremely beautiful, there has to be a love triangle. If the story has to go on for novel length, the heroine will have to marry the wrong guy. The only suspense is whether she will go to the man she wants to marry or shell accept the guy she marries (both the options have been explored by other writers).

Writing About Coorg, She Is In Her Element

Although the story of Tiger Hills talks about three generations, for the most part Sarita Mandanna talks about Devi and her two men. By the time the third generation becomes the center of attraction in the book, the readers feel worn out. Sarita Mandanna is in her element when she writes about Coorg, there is no doubt about it. The characters are not written the same way, though. When the characters move out to foreign locations, the author doesnt seem that comfortable.
