Tightening Metric Fasteners With Hex Wrenches

I am one of those do it yourself types who likes to tinker with just about everything around the house

. Last week I noticed that my office chair (which I have had for 15 years) had a loose arm and was wobbly as I sat down. Instead of diving into my work like I usually do I decided it was time to fix the loose arm and give the chair a once over to make certain that all of the stainless steel fasteners were securely tightened up.

Going to my tool box I retrieved a hex wrench that fit into the six sided head of the individual metric fasteners and went to work securing the arm of the chair back into its proper position. After completing the task I checked the opposite side for any loose fasteners and then flipped the whole thing over to make sure that the wheels and base were tight enough. Once I was satisfied that my office chair was safe to sit in again I went to work at my computer.

A few days later I noticed that one of the draw in my wife's dresser was sagging and upon closer inspection discovered that like the chair, the side of the drawer had pulled loose and was hanging on by the end of the screw that held the side and front of the draw firmly in place. Reaching for my tool box I pulled out a screwdriver and removed the draw from the dresser to gain access to the lose screw.

Making sure that the wood panels were aligned I proceeded to tighten up the loose screw and return the draw to its place in the dresser. Because I like the Scandinavian designs of many home furnishings I have a large quantity of furniture that has been build from a kit. Using the accompanying stainless steel fasteners to build the draws and assemble the frame that constitutes the dressers and television stand in my home, I have built up a collection of hex wrenches that vary in size.

Like others that do minor repairs and engineer their own solutions to failing wooden furniture I rely on the different sizes and lengths of metric fasteners to repair the broken items around my home. With the right tools and an a set of fasteners that can fit almost any project I have become adept at breathing new life into items that I thought were on their way to the dumpster. With some ingenuity and a screwdriver, a hammer and my hex wrenches, I have become quite good at repairing the furnishings that in my home.
