Every shoe manufacturer sizes differently. If youve got a pair of Adidas trainers that are a size 6 and a pair of Birkenstocks that are a 5 and a half, those are the baseline sizes you should try in each different brand. You can do it the other way around, too. Try on shoes you like the look (but not the price tag) of on the high street or in the shopping centre, note down the size, brand, and model name, then go online and see if you can find them at a better price.

If you try something on from one brand and you really dont like it- the toe box is too narrow or the heel cuts into the back of your foot, stay away from buying shoes from that brand online, because the chances are high that the shape and build characteristics will be similar.
