Tips For Achieving Vibrant And Captivating Colors
When it comes to creating fine art pieces, especially paintings
, color theory plays a very huge part in the success of the piece. Color is something that creates feelings, moods, and eye appeal. Using the right colors for your fine art pieces will bring harmony and balance as well as accentuate different aspects of your piece just by the colors you use. For the novice painter, the unlimited combinations of colors can sometimes be almost overwhelming. Mixing colors correctly is an art form on its own. New students are often afraid of mixing colors on their own, preferring instead the more convenient premixed colors that you get out of those tubes. This takes the 'artistry' away from the piece. As an artist, learning to mix your own colors will be worth it even if all you get in your first few attempts is 'mud'.
Tips on making lighter or darker colors
When trying to achieve a lighter color, the best method is to have white, or the lightest color available, as your base and then just add a darker hue to come up with a different color. Adding white to a dark green to get a light green will take a lot of white paint but adding a touch of green to white will quickly create a soft light green. To generate different versions of a primary color, like blue, you either add touches of lighter hues to change it or you can also build a scale that will begin with white and graduating slowly into deeper tones of blue. Color is basically a reflection of light or a perception that is seen visually. The depth of a particular color is dependent upon the saturation of the pigments and the reflection or concentration of light taken in contrast to white, black or even gray.
Transforming an opaque paint to become transparent
Just like changing the tone of a color, it is much easier to take a transparent color to an opaque. Thinning out an opaque can be tricky because of its density while the transparent color is easily transformed by increasing its density gradually.
Avoiding the mud when mixing colors
Many paint tubes indicate the pigment used in producing their color on the label. It is advisable to work with as few pigments as possible if you want to achieve bright color mixtures. Therefore, choose the tube which indicates that it is made from a single color dye. When adding a darker hue unto a light base, apply in gradual and small amounts so that you won't go beyond the color that you want. Test with some small samples until you get the value that you want and do not be afraid to experiment with different colors in order to familiarize yourself with their reactions when mixed in certain ways.
Do not go overboard when blending colors in your attempt to attain a new and vibrant mixture. In other words, stop just short of where you think they will be thoroughly mixed together. When you spread the color on your canvas it will change how it looks slightly but it will be more intriguing if it is not mixed to death.
