Tips For Keeping Your All Weather Furniture Healthy
Don't just assume that because something has the phrase "all weather" in the title that it is impervious to damage
. With all the different things that can go wrong - all the natural disasters that you just can't plan for - there are some things you need to do to maximize the life of your all weather furniture and protect it against the unexpected. Luckily, the good news is that the things you must do are easy and require the smallest amount of effort on your part. Unlike certain types of furniture that may need to be relocated for the smallest rain, all weather furniture can take most of what Mother Nature dishes out, as long as you do the following things:
1. Keep environment properly humidified.
While you don't want the wood and other natural materials used to create all weather furniture to be constantly soaked, you do want to keep them in a moist environment that prevents them from drying out. Occasionally, maybe once per week, you should consider wiping down the furniture with a cool, damp rag. Also, if you are keeping your furniture in a sunroom or enclosed patio, you should think about adding a humidifier that will keep the temperature and the quality of the air at an acceptable feel for the nature of the materials.
2. Beware of extreme hot or cold.
These situations by themselves will not damage the wood or the structuring of the furniture, but they do lead to extremely dry environs, which can sneak up on the furniture itself and cause it to dry out. When wood gets dried out, it is much easier to experience cracking or splitting from heavy use. If you want your all weather furniture to last, don't just assume that precipitation and winds are the only things that you have to worry about. With climate change, many areas are experiencing even more dramatic changes that can put this or any type of furniture at risk. It's good to be vigilant.
3. Careful of how and where on the furniture you sit.
Just because something is all weather, that doesn't mean that it will be able to stand up to uneven distribution of use and weight. When you are dealing with thinner cushions, you must be especially careful. When people sit, they have a tendency to do so in the same way again and again. Over time, this can cause the material to sag and break down. It's far better to use a thicker cushion and to rotate or flip cushions to ensure that all parts of the furniture are getting the same use.
With these tips in place, your all weather furniture can and will last for decades.
