Tips For Living With Nut Allergies

If you have gone through testing and have found that you have nut allergies

, it is best to stay safe and follow as many guidelines as possible. There are some things that you can do to make sure that you or your child stay safe and still feel like a part of the normal eating society because you are!

Even though scientists are working on the issue, still the only real way to stay safe if you have nut allergies is to totally avoid peanuts and/or tree nuts. What makes this difficult is the fact that not only do most people need to avoid eating the actual food but they also need to avoid eating the oils and any other products that might contain trace amounts of the offending ingredients, which can be tricky to try to do. Reading labels very carefully becomes an important part of the persons daily life. Manufacturers are required in the United States to state directly on their labels if their products contain these offenders. There are three phrases that are most often used for these purposes, and these include Produced on Shared Equipment with Nuts or Peanuts, May Contain Nuts, and Produced in a Facility that also Processes Nuts.

These phrases on labels are designed so that people are warned about the possibilities of cross contamination. This is when offending ingredients are not intentionally added to a product but the product may still contain that ingredient in trace amounts because they share facilities with products that are made with them. There are some types of foods that pose a greater risk for people who have this condition. One of the biggest problem groups is baked goods, including cookies. Unless you are aware of exactly what has gone into your cookies and sweet snacks you should avoid them, to be on the safe side.

Another risky group of foods is candy, and this includes chocolates. These confectioneries unfortunately are often riddled with hidden trace amounts of nuts and peanuts. Ice cream is also another big problem group, since many flavors that dont contain offenders are made in a facility where others do. It may surprise you to learn that there are many sauces that contain these as hidden ingredients too, and youll want to be careful with Indian, African and Asian cuisine as well. All of these foods, and many others, may contain ingredients that are dangerous for people who have nut allergies.
