Tips For Taking Notes In Class
People hardly realize how fast memory fades
People hardly realize how fast memory fades. Studies have shown that, without review, 47% of what a person has just learned is forgotten in the first 20 minutes and 62% is forgotten after the first day. Therefore, having good lecture notes to review can be really helpful while you prepare for the exams. Here are a few tips for making note-taking in class more effective:
GET PREPARED FOR THE CLASS:
Read assigned material and previous notes before class. Make notations about material or concepts such as vocabulary or words that you find difficult to understand. Doing so, you will have a better understanding about what the instructor is lecturing about and that will allow you to better decipher the more important points of the lecture.
Use a three-ring binder instead of a spiral or bound book so that pages can be easily removed for reviewing. Handouts can be inserted into your notes for cross-referencing. You can also insert your own out-of-class notes in the correct order.
Bring highlighters to class. Instructors will frequently make comments like, "This is an important concept," or "Make sure you understand this." These are direct clues that this will more than likely be on an exam. By highlighting, you wont miss out on key concepts while cramming for exams.
SHARPEN YOUR LISTENING SKILLS:
"Learn how to listen and you will prosper even from those who talk badly." Plutarch Greek (biographer and philosopher)
Start by entering the classroom with a positive attitude. Going to class with a negative mindset only sets the stage for inattentive listening. Approaching lectures with a positive attitude allows one to be open-minded and enables you to get the most out of the information presented.
Make a conscious effort to pay attention. Without concentration there is no focus, and without focus there is no learning.
Dont get easily distracted when a lecture takes an unexpected detoursay a student asks a question you aren't particularly interested in. Sustain your focus at that moment, for the lecture will get back on track in no time, or else you might miss crucial information that should have been noted.
DEVELOP YOUR OWN NOTE-TAKING METHOD:
You need to tweak the structure and organization of your notes in order to increase your note-taking speed and comprehension. To be good at note-taking,
Start notes on each new lecture on a new page. Make sure to date and number each page as the sequence of material is important.
Write on one side of the paper only. So that you can sort them out side-by-side for easier reviewing whenever needed.
Leave blank spaces. This allows you to add comments or note questions later.
Make your notes as brief as possible. Use a phrase instead of a sentence and develop a system of abbreviations and symbols that you can use wherever possible.
Note all unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts you don't understand. This reminds you to look them up later.
You can refer to popular note-taking formats, on the internet.
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO FACTS AND FIGURES:
Knowing what and how much to write down is sometimes difficult. Rely on the following list for what to include in your notes.
Details, facts, or explanations that expand or explain the main points that are mentioned
Definitions and examples, word by word.
Enumerations or lists of things that are discussed.
Material written on the chalkboard or on a transparency, including drawings or charts.
REVIEW AND EDIT YOUR NOTES:
Reviewing and editing class notes is the most important part of note-taking and is essential to increase learning capacity.
It is extremely important to review your notes quite soon after taking it down.
Edit for words and phrases that are illegible or don't make sense.
Write out abbreviated words that might be unclear later and do it with a different colored pen so that you can figure out the changes.
Fill in key words and questions in the left-hand column.
Underline or highlight anything you don't understand to remember to ask the instructor.
Compare your notes with the textbook reading and fill in important details in the blank spaces you left.
Consider rewriting or typing up your notes.
Implementing these note-making tips will help you to focus on specific theories and facts while studying and will also narrow your field of study to what is more relevant at the time.
