When you have ruled out fixtures and the interior pipes, you can now check for any irrigation lines outside the structure or for the water line running coming from the meter.

Detecting The Damage

Leak detection may be quite a long process and an expensive one as well. While most leaks may create visible damage on the flooring or on the drywall, there are other homeowners who might only notice the damage by their high water bill. Before you can even receive a staggering high amount of water bill, the first thing that you should do is to inspect your water fixtures and the places where the water pipes are running through the floors and walls for any visible signs of damages. You have to pay extra attention to the lower areas where most of the leaking may be collected. Pipefittings and valves are the most common areas for leakage to happen since these are the areas where the pipes could be exposed to temperatures that are subfreezing.

Toilets

There are also times when the owner of the house or the one who is in charge of the commercial building may notice rising or high water bill and one or more toilets within the building could be the one that is liable for it. The first thing to do is to inspect the filler valves and flush for apparent signs of damage or wear, then listen if the toilets water supply is running continuously. There are a few plumbers who would recommend applying a bit of food coloring in the reservoir tank then wait for fifteen to thirty minutes if the dye would appear on the toilet bowl. In a situation where it does, this would signify a leaking flapper. In case the owner or the one who is in charge cannot find the source of the leak in the building, turning off the water supply may be best.

Using The Water Meter

The person in charge or the owner should find the area where the water runs throughout the building and try to search for the cutoff valve that would entirely shut down the water. There are some instances where the water can only be shut down at the water meter with the use of specific tools. The owner must remember the reading on the water meter so that he will be able to find out which sides of the valves are having leaks. In case the meter stops after you have cut off the water in the entire building or house, the leak is probably found in the interior. In case the meter is still running, then the leak may probably be in the water line that is running throughout the building.

In case the leak was not found, it would be better to call for a professional to do it for you. Though the service may be pricey, this can prevent further expensive water damage to your house or building and may prevent growth of fungi, mildew and molds.
