Get busy
Once you convince yourself that life is indeed livable and enjoyable without your ex, you can then proceed to actually live. If you want to get your ex back, you must busy yourself with something that makes life worthwhile. You can spend your time with your children if you had any, or go back to school to pursue your career. You can also take an extra hobby that you were probably unable to do because of the relationship. These ventures make your life worthwhile and as long as you keep busy you will avoid sinking into the quicksand of depression.
Don't contact your ex
This can be easier said than done. If you feel wronged or unjustly treated, you will no doubt experience an overwhelming desire to contact your ex and make things right. Sometimes you may realize that you cannot simply make things right over the phone or in one conversation, but you have "important things" that you need to say to your ex. In many cases this is fueled by anger and can totally ruin your chances of getting your ex back. Avoid this and instead exercise self-control.
Whenever you feel this overwhelming urge to email them, texts message them or call them, resist by doing something in the exact opposite. The reason contacting your ex can be detrimental to your winning them back is because you are not in their good books just yet and it is too soon for them to have developed a healthy view of you. They have also not started missing you yet and feel that they are perfectly able to live their lives without you. Contacting them simply reinforces their notion that you cannot live without them, which will be grounds for more mistreatment of you by them.
