Tips On How To Apply And Maintain A Horse Rug

When putting on a rug it is important to try not to make too much noise and to avoid approaching the horse in a way that might scare them

. It is recommended that you have a headcollar and the horse is tied securely to avoid them moving and getting tangled in the rug. Firstly double the rug over so that the inside is facing outwards and the right hand side tail end pairs with the right hand side front end. This will make it easier to throw the rug over the horses back without making too much noise and flapping about. Place the rug across the horses back, with it further forward than it would usually sit, then unfold it backwards.

Firstly fasten the front chest straps and work backwards. Gently pull the rug backwards to ensure the hair sits in the right way. The front straps should be done up first as the rug would still stay in place if the horse did manage to get away. If the leg straps or belly straps were done up and the horse ran off then it could easily become caught or tangled up as the rug slips off backwards. Always check that the rug and the straps fit properly.

When taking the rug off again firstly undo all the straps, starting this time at the tail straps and working forwards until all the straps are undone. Then take the front of the rug and fold it backwards in half before sliding the rug backwards off the horses hindquarters. If it is a turnout rug and it is wet and muddy then always hang the rug up somewhere to dry out before using it again.

It is recommended that you check the fit of your rugs regularly and also check the horse all over for any sign of rubbing. It is also important to clean your rugs on a regular basis but before doing so you should try to remove as much dirt whilst it is dry. This can be achieved by placing it over a fence and using a brush to remove whatever dirt is possible. The underside should also be brushed to remove hair and any other dirt which may have accumulated there. Another tip is to use non-detergent and non-bio soap because the detergent can cause damage to the rug over time.

There are lots of different rugs available for all occasions. Make sure you select the correct type of rug for the occasion and the weather.
